Zoetrope All-Story - Summer 2006Discovered this magazine while browsing the shelves and absolutely fell in love with it. If you enjoy short fiction, you’ll love this. I think the magazine itself tends to defy classification, other than it being a magazine with short stories. One issue I read has a mix of short fiction and recipes even! The magazine is founded by the American film director, Francis Ford Coppola. The magazine website is at www.all-story.com.

The cover shows the Summer 2006 issue (vol. 10, No. 2). Stories that I liked from this issue:

  • P. 16. “Love and Honour and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice“/ Nam Le – the story describes a son’s relationship with his father. Both were refugees from Communist Vietnam. The son is an aspiring/ struggling author who finally decides to write about his “Vietnamese Story”, or rather, this father’s experience during the Vietnam War.
  • P. 62. “Stab”/ Chris Adrian – this story featured an autistic boy, who befriends a young girl who kills animals for what seems to be no apparent reason (although the reason is revealed at the end).
  • P. 84. “Tony Takitami“/ Haruki Murakimi (translated by Jay Rubin) – to be honest, this is the first time I’ve ever read the popular Haruki Murakimi. If his story is anything to go by, I’m sure I’ll like the rest of his novels (which are always on the library’s reservation list).

It retails at USD$5.95 at Amazon.com, which is more than SGD$10. I’m glad the library subscribes to the magazine!
